According to the National Health Commission, as of December 21, 2021, 31 provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the Central Government) and Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps have reported a total of 276.676 million doses of new crown virus vaccines. Among them, children aged 3-11 have received more than 140 million doses. Vaccination for people over 60 years old is also continuing.

However, as a special group, can pregnant women receive the new crown vaccine? How safe is it?

Recently, Kexing Holding Biotechnology Co., Ltd. and IQVIA Brazil jointly released a preprinted article on the medRxiv platform "Safety Status of Pregnant and Parturient Women's Vaccination in Brazil", and the related report was published for the first time.

It is reported that a total of 3333 cases of suspected abnormal response to vaccination from April 2021 to August 2021 were collected for analysis in this study. The relevant data comes from the Brazilian Suspected Abnormal Response to Vaccination Monitoring System (SI-EAPV).

During the study period, pregnant women were vaccinated with a total of 252,430 doses of the new crown vaccine Kellyf. The age of maternal recipients was mainly 21-35 years old (74.06%), covering adolescents under 20 and older women over 40. During pregnancy The number of vaccinations accounted for 76.66% of the total number of vaccinations during pregnancy and childbirth.

The results of the study show that the Kochenkellife vaccine has shown good safety in the pregnant and lying-in women population, and that the incidence of adverse events of the Kochenkellife vaccine is lower than that of the new crown vaccines on other technology platforms.

Studies have shown that although the case fatality rate of new coronary pneumonia is lower than that of SARS and MERS in the past, the pathogen, the new coronavirus, is highly contagious. About 20% of infected people will develop severe illness and may die soon. The elderly, people with underlying diseases, and pregnant women are more vulnerable when facing new coronary pneumonia.

Compared with non-pregnant women, pregnant women may be more likely to develop severe illness after being infected with the new coronavirus, increasing the risk of hospitalization in the intensive care unit, invasive ventilation, extracorporeal lung membrane oxygenation, and even death.

However, at this stage, there is still a lack of evidence on the safety and protective efficacy of the vaccine in the pregnant and parturient population, especially for the safety of the new crown vaccine for pregnant women who are vulnerable to new coronary pneumonia.

In view of this situation, it is important to establish a safety evaluation framework for the new crown vaccine among pregnant women to monitor and advise this high-risk group. According to Brazil's National Immunization Program for New Coronary Pneumonia, pregnant women are listed as a priority group for vaccination.

In March 2021, Brazil began to vaccinate the new crown vaccine for domestic pregnant women. Kochenkläf was the first new crown vaccine approved in Brazil for pregnant women.

Data show that Brazil has a relatively high maternal mortality rate due to new coronary pneumonia, and vaccination is a very important strategy to reduce the impact of new coronary pneumonia on pregnant women and fetuses.

In a sense, this study fills in the lack of data on the safety of the new crown vaccine in the maternal population, and provides a basis for Brazil and the world to carry out the new crown vaccination for the pregnant and lying-in women population.

Of course, for the safety assessment of the pregnant and lying-in women population, it is still necessary to better understand the incidence of adverse events related to the second and booster injections and the exchange of vaccine components, so as to provide more extensive safety evidence.
